Defining Homestay

What exactly is Homestay?

The first thing we need to do is explain what exactly a Homestay Home is! Homestay is not a hotel, a motel, nor a typical B&B. Homestay is a non-commercialized, private residence with paying Guest(s) who enjoy staying in the comfort and security of a family home. Further, these guests will reside in the family home for an extended period of time, months or sometimes even years.

Homestay is a homeowner–occupied private residence where the primary purpose of the home is the residence, and the secondary purpose is providing accommodation to a few paying guests. It is safe, affordable housing for international students, interns, traveling professionals and adult visitors from other countries, who are looking to experience and learn your lifestyle. Homestay is a home-away-from-home.

A Homestay is typically located in a residential area where the Homestay Host welcomes one or more Guests to share their home. The homeowner may have one or more rooms to rent. It is usually a very relaxed type of accommodation, keeping the majority of space for the Hosts family. Homestay is comparable to the so-called bed and breakfast that is so popular in European countries.

Many people believe that it is totally illegal to rent out part of their residence. In most jurisdictions it is perfectly legal to share your house with a limited number of unrelated people who pay you rent. Your local zoning office can help you out and answer any questions you may have.
